  • Museo del Paesaggio - Verbania Pallanza

From Grand Tours to artworks and contemporary cultural events

The Museo del Paesaggio aims to enhance the artistic heritage which has sedimented along the time through a unique source of inspiration: the Maggiore Lake territory from the mountains to the plain.
Founded in Pallanza in 1909 by Antonio Massara and the association "Pro Verbano" with the name of 'Museo Storico del Verbano e delle Valli adiacenti'(later called, in 1914, 'Museo del Paesaggio') it is the most long-lived and prestigious cultural institution of the Piedmont side of Maggiore Lake. Placed in a territorial context touched for a long time by many Grand Tours through the Alps, it doesn't only collect artworks, but also gathers an "inheritance of affections", together with a special way of living nature, environment and tourism. That's why it stands as a hub for local and national multidisciplinary events.
  • Doll Museum at Rocca Borromeo - Angera

Since 1988, the Rocca Borromeo has housed the Doll Museum, which is displayed in the twelve rooms of the Viscontea and Borromea wings. It is an extraordinary collection of dolls, toys, books, dolls' furniture and table and board games which, due to the over 1,000 pieces displayed, constitutes one of the most important museums of its kind in Europe. There are wooden dolls from the eighteenth century, French closed-mouth dolls, German dolls, and "bébé Caractères" made of wax, papier-màché, porcelain, fabric, celluloid, and plastic, illustrate the historical and cultural evolution of this quite extraordinary object, which has always been an important protagonist of childhood.
The museum has well-documented didactic information, which accompanies visitors on a fascinating journey through time to discover the fundamental gift of play.

  • Umbrellas and Parasols Museum in Gignese

The Gignese Museum is the only one in the world devoted to umbrellas and parasols; its collection comprises over a thousand examples of umbrellas, parasols and handles.

Some items are curiosities, or of considerable historical and cultural importance, like the umbrellas that belonged to Queen Margherita of Savoy or the Risorgimento patriot and politician Giuseppe Mazzini.

  • Giant Statue of San Carlo Borromeo - Arona

The giant statue of San Carlo Borromeo stands near the town of Arona, close to the southern end of Lake Maggiore. The local people call it the “Sancarlone” (“Big St Charles”), and it is the symbol of the town.

This huge statue, erected in honour of the well-loved saint, who was born in Arona, is full of significance, and exemplifies a particular kind of religious faith which finds its expression in the outsize. San Carlo seems to look on his people kindly but severely; his head slightly inclined, the Saint blesses his native town with his right hand raised, while in his left hand he holds the great book of laws of the Milanese church.
