  • Flower Parade 1-4 September, Verbania Pallanza

The “Corso Fiorito” or Flower Parade, a classic event in the summer calendar of events on Lake Maggiore, is programmed from 1st to 4th September 2011 on Verbania Pallanza lakefront.

The Parade was started in 1909 as a showcase for the skill of local gardeners and as a way of publicising the beauty of the flowers grown in the lake area. The first “floats” were the carriages of the local nobility, bicycles and early cars.

Today more than ever, this “battle of the flowers” has become a spectacular event demonstrating an unparalleled standard of skill. The floats are now decorated with thousands of flowers, compositions, statues, clothes made entirely of flowers, testifying to the creative imagination of local growers. The public has responded by attending the event in increasing numbers to marvel at the skill and artistry on display.

Various techniques are used in decorating the floats. The supporting structures are made by local craftsmen, and “dressed” by the laborious application of the imagination of the flower growers. Each medium-sized float requires on average 20,000 flowers.

A unique spectacle of flowers and colours, not to be missed!

  • The 50th Stresa Festival

The Festival Settimane Musicali di Stresa was founded in 1961 by the Venetian lawyer Italo Trentinaglia de Daverio inspired by his great love of music rather than by any personal interest. He grew up in a musical environment: his father, Erardo, was General Director of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, General Manager of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice as well as a prolific composer. The Trentinaglia family owned a villa in Stresa and often gave hospitality to musical personalities such as Umberto Giordano and Arturo Toscanini who, together with Victor de Sabata, was one of their most frequent guests.

Since 1999, the name of the Festival has been modified to Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore; among the new venues stands out the magical Hermitage Santa Caterina del Sasso where every year J.S. Bach's Suite for solo cello are performed by a different musician. Other new venues are the auditorium "La Fabbrica" in Villadossola, the Visconteo Castle in Vogogna, the Borromeo Castle in Angera, Villa Ponti in Arona, The Chiesa Madonna di Campagna and Villa San Remigio in Verbania, the Chiesa Vecchia in Belgirate and the Basilica San Giulio in Orta.

Since June 2000 the Festival has a new Artistic Director: Gianandrea Noseda, who has earned in a very short time an international reputation as an outstanding conductor.

The presence at the Festival of symphonic and chamber orchestras, conductors and soloists, be they emerging talents or of international renown ensure the continuation along the tracks that were laid out more than thirty years ago.

  • Tones on the Stones

Spectacular settings, exclusive productions and international artists – these are the ingredients that make Tones on the Stones an unparalleled experience, something quite new in world arts performance.

The aim, and the challenge, of Tones on the Stones is to highlight the aesthetic as well as the historical value of the stone quarries of the Verbano Cusio Ossola Province, by giving spectators a strikingly new viewpoint and enabling them to appreciate the rugged angularity of these places through new eyes.

The dramatic setting provided by the carved-out mountainside gives breathtaking impact to the performances, transforming the quarry into a uniquely imposing stage. Quarries are often viewed in a controversial light, the object of debate between different interpretations of the environment.

Used as artistically-lit stage sets for Tones on the Stones they are given new life, in an innovative reinterpretation of these impressive and fascinating places. Normally the scene of the hard labour of cutting stone, they are transformed into “theatres of stone” by skill, passion and the commitment of the companies that own them.

This gives Tones on the Stones its unique impact.
